“Raiders of the Lost Arts” – Art Adventures 2014 Summer Camps
Camp Dates: June 9th- August 15th

Is your child dreaming of adventure & discovery? The Arts Center offers weekly camp options including classes for teens ages 13-16 and new for 2014 – Jr. Raider classes for 4 & 5 yr. olds! Children can explore ancient mysteries & discover “lost” treasure in 14 camps jammed with adventures in art, theater, music and history held in the safe, creative atmosphere of the Irving Arts Center. Students learn mad skills, make friends and have fun!

Camp #1 SEUSSICAL JR.-Lyric Stage Musical Theatre Intensive
June 9– 27 * Ages 12 -18 * $685 *Camp Hours: 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Kids ages 12-18 get a chance to shine in a fully staged production of Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty’s SEUSSICAL JR. produced by Lyric Stage. The camp features in-depth instruction from musical theatre professionals in vocal performance, dance, and acting, and includes special workshops in stage combat, stage management and production. Camp #2 “Rock Stars!” (Multi-Arts)
June 9 – 13 * Ages 6 -12 * $210 * Camp Hours: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Worlds will be rocked as campers get inspired by the mysteries of Stonehenge, make Byzantine medallions, create cave paintings and petroglyphs, explore 88 keys during an intro to piano class and tumble into fun during intro to gymnastics.

Camp #3 “Imagination Exploration!” Theatre Mini-Camp
June 16 – 20 * Ages 4 -5 * $75 *Camp Hours: 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Using creative dramatics, Jr. Raiders are introduced to theatre. They will play interactive games and performances that encourage the development of creativity, imagination and social skills. The week culminates in a final showcase for parents. FUN FACT: children involved regularly in art, drama and music classes have higher problem solving and critical thinking skills than students without art education. Camp #4 “Dig It!” (Multi-Arts)
June 16 – 20 * Ages 6 - 12 * $210 *Camp Hours: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Campers will be inspired by the wonders found in an archaeological dig as they make dinosaur tracks from plaster, create clay bas-relief tiles using earth pigments and precious metals, draw maps & make mazes and use yoga to explore the myths of the lost city of Atlantis.

Camp #5 “Treasure Hunters!” Art Mini-Camp
June 23–27 * Ages 4 -5 * $75 *Camp Hours: 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Camp #6 “Ancient Mysteries” (Multi-Arts)
June 23 - 27 * Ages 6 – 12 * $210 * Camp Hours: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The ancient mysteries of Peru provide the key to unlocking adventure as campers learn how to go from mud to clay masterpieces, embark on a mythic monster quest using watercolors and drawing techniques, make prints using Wari textile patterns, build and play musical instruments and discover dance. FUN FACT: our mythic monster quest will go to Crete to find the Minotaur, to Greece for Medusa, to the Himalayas to track the Yeti, and finally to Scotland to find the Loch Ness monster!

Camp #7 “Tribal Vibes” (Multi-Arts)
July 7 – 11 * Ages 6 – 12 * $210 * Camp Hours: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The cultures of the Southwest Indian, Peruvian and Mayan people provide inspiration for focus areas that include Pueblo clay creations, symbol weaving, relief printmaking on paper and t-shirts, beginning/intermediate guitar and dance.

Camp #8 “When Worlds Collide” (Teen Scene)
July 7- 11 * Ages 13 -16 * Half day $105/Full day $210 * Half day: 8 a.m. to noon or 1 – 5 p.m.
This camp for teens ages 13-16, is offered in full or half day sessions.


Class 1 (8-10 AM) Drawing – pencil, pen & charcoal
Class 2 (10-Noon) Painting – palate knifes, brushes, rags & more
Class 3 (1-3 PM) Peruvian Retablos – 3D works of “altar” art
Class 4 (3-5 PM): Mixed Media – contemporary art meets the legacy of the ancient world.

Camp #9 “Walk Like an Egyptian” (Multi-Arts)
July 14 - 18 * Ages 6 – 12 * $210 * Camp Hours: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Time travel to ancient Egypt and make papyrus paper, sculpt a pyramid & make a clay mummy, craft a scroll based on hieroglyphics, paint self-portraits as a fabulous Pharaoh and explore yoga Egypt-style!

Camp #10 “Magic Time Machine” (Teen Scene)
July 21-25 *Ages 13 -16 * Half day $105/Full day $210 * Half day: 8 a.m. to noon or 1 – 5 p.m.
This camp, just for teens 13-16, is offered in full or half day sessions.


Class 1 (8-10 AM) Sketch & Stretch - drawing & yoga
Class 2 (10-Noon) Asian Shadow Puppets – mixed media art & storytelling
Class 3 (1-3 PM): Digital Photography – using hand-held devices (While a tablet for shared student use will be made available, students are encouraged to bring and utilize their own smart phones and/or tablets.)
Class 4 (3-5 PM): Encaustic Painting – oil pigment & wax creations
FUN FACT: the Greco-Roman Egyptian Fayum mummy portraits are the oldest surviving encaustic panel paintings and they date from 100-300 A.D. Dude, that’s seriously old!!

Camp #11 “Drum Beats & Camp Fires” (Multi-Arts)
July 21 – 25* Ages 6 – 12 * $210 *Camp Hours: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Inspired by the art, culture & clothing of ancient civilizations, campers make books with secret compartments, use symbols to make a cartouche based on their names, write & tell stories based on an ancient culture and learn Afro-Peruvian drumming techniques.

Camp #12 “Story Tellers” (Multi-Arts)
July 28– August 1 * Ages 6 – 12 * $210 *Camp Hours: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Learn there is more than one way to tell a story. Stitch and glue Peruvian Arpilleras (fabric banners depicting village life,) make faux animal skin paintings, tell stories through mixed media art, decorate cast fibers in a bas-relief foam carving and compose original songs with artist-in-residence Morgan Taylor (Gustafer Yellowgold.)
FUN FACT: Songs recorded in class will be featured in a performance of the Gustafer Yellowgold Show at the Arts Center on August 2 at 11 AM. Camp tuition includes one free ticket to the performance.

Camp #13 “Time Bandits & Tomb Raiders!”
Theatre Camp with Child’s Play Touring Theatre
August 4 – 8 * Ages 7 – 14 * $210 * Camp Hours: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.


Important: Students enrolled in this Theatre Camp must attend rehearsal during camp hours & be available to perform the evening of August 8 at 6:30 p.m..

Campers learn and develop skills in acting, improvisation, singing, movement, writing, production, adaptation as they create, write, produce and perform an original musical theatre production.

Camp #14 “Gold Diggers & Rock Hounds”
Theatre Camp with Child’s Play Touring Theatre
August 11-15 ●Ages 7 – 14 ● $210 ● Camp Hours: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
