Bolero Texas: Community Dance Workshop with Keigwin + Company

September 18 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm

| Free |RSVP

Under the artistic Direction of Larry Keigwin, KEIGWIN + COMPANY comes to Irving for a two-week COMMUNITY RESIDENCY starting Monday, September 18. Inspired by Maurice Ravel’s iconic score, a cast drawn from more than 50 members of the community will perform a large-scale dance celebration, Bolero Texas, as part of an evening-length program, performed by KEIGWIN + COMPANY scheduled for Saturday, September 30 at 7:30 pm.

The community is invited to a free, open workshop with Larry on Monday, Sept. 18 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  Following the first workshop, rehearsals for the creation of “Bolero Texas” will take place in the evenings over the course of the next two weeks. No prior dance training is required!  The goal is to engage a truly diverse group, with all segments and ages of the population represented.  Under Keigwin’s guidance, the workshop group will create movement to Ravel’s Bolero that is uniquely Irving and positively Texas.

Bolero is the centerpiece of KEIGWIN + COMPANY’s community outreach efforts and a collaborative process that allows participants to reflect on their lifestyles and capture the uniqueness of each locale. Bolero has been done in 13 communities across the country including Santa Barbara, New York, Chicago, Palo Alto, Akron, Norfolk, and Denver, among others.  In the New York debut of Bolero, people read newspapers while going about their business, fanned themselves in the heat and scurried about on various modes of transportation while in Bolero Santa Barbara, there was a parade of surfboards, bikinis and beach balls.

When Bolero comes to Texas for the first time, the piece will celebrate all things “Texas” from cowboys to folklorico and football. Bolero Texas is meant to encompass what’s often thought of as quintessential Texas, fittingly using the two-step and line dances as a foundation. Where it goes from there under the direction of Keigwin will largely be influenced by the community. Given the diverse population of North Texas, and in particular, Irving, home to the most diverse zip code in all the United States, anything is possible.

So come one, come all… come experience Bolero Texas yourself!  To be a part of this truly unique opportunity, please join us for the free community workshop Monday, Sept 18 at 5:30 p.m.  Let us know you are coming and RSVP for the workshop on Facebook or via Eventbrite.
