Irving Public Library invites Irving ISD students in grades 4-12 and adults to write an essay inspired by this year’s Irving Reads selection, the novel True Grit by Charles Portis. In no more than 300 words, the essay should focus on a time in your life when you or someone you know showed true grit, by sticking to their goals no matter what stood in their way. Winners will be announced during a special awards presentation held at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 24 at the Irving Arts Center. Prizes will be awarded to the first ($100), second ($75) and third place ($50) in each category.

They will discuss the impact of Pakistani visual tradition on their artistic practice; explore how art history has helped shape each artist’s unique contemporary visual language; and delve into the tensions between geo-specific artistic traditions and the globalized nature of contemporary art.

Meet the best-selling author and illustrator Matthew Holm, creator of BabyMouse and Squish! Matthew will be on hand to discuss his creative process, and specifically some of his works which are on display in the Bam! It’s a Picture Book exhibition through January 28 at Irving Arts Center. The Friends of the Irving Library will be on-site with copies of Holm’s graphic novels available for purchase.
