Philip Pohl has been, from his earliest memory, always absolutely in awe at the beauty around him in nature. Pohl was raised in an artistic and musical family, which encouraged his early fascination with art. As a young boy, he found beauty in the smallest things to the most sweeping vistas. He found inspiration in the masters of the Hudson River School and art seen both on T.V. and in galleries where he grew up.  Pohl recognized a profound desire to begin painting the images he had been collecting in his mind and could vividly see himself grasping the art of painting.

Born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1971, He began drawing in elementary school, extending his interest to painting by the time he had reached eighth grade, and was selling paintings as early as his high school years.  A trip to Europe in 1988, while in High School, affected his drawing but the first big influence on his painting would come from a trip and later a move to far west Texas and southern New Mexico in 1993. This inspiration came from the vast horizon, huge sky, and rugged landscape that define the region. Pohl’s artistic career and exposure grew when, in 2002, a local gallery owner saw his work and asked him to hang in his gallery. Pohl accepted and the gallery proved to be a very successful relationship, one made even more important as this was his first gallery experience.  He has donated work to charities, been accepted into international juried competitions in physical and on-line galleries, and been commissioned for paintings and murals.

Unless painting a commissioned work or a specific subject, Pohl paints purely from imagination, which translates into a unique style that is hard to categorize and can draw the viewer in at deep emotional levels. As his passion grew, he also recognized the challenge and depth to good abstract art and began to create works in this style as well. Whether realistic or abstract in style, Philip Pohl’s work always exhibits organic properties with light playing a very important role.

Working mainly in acrylics, Pohl has created a style that is very much his own that proves to be alluring to viewers. In regards to his landscapes, Pohl comments, “I want my finished work to reflect as much creativity as possible, including composition, color, light, and shadow.  The components of a given painting may be composed of images from diverse areas of the world, often at varying times of the day or in different seasons.” “My images, while fundamentally realistic, can have elements that are distinctly ideal and fantastic that one may only see once in a lifetime if at all”. Pohl’s executes his work in rich, pure colors. He is known for painting with dramatic contrasts and unusual points of view, making even the simplest subject stand out in grace and beauty.  The artist is also fascinated with the complexity and subtlety of form and color within shadows that are often major components of his work.

Philip Pohl has worked in the field of interior design and sales since receiving a BS in interior design from TCU in 1993. He currently lives with his wife, Veronica, and son, Philip Ryan, in Coppell, TX.
