Irving Arts Center celebrates Smithsonian Museum Day with free family activities

IRVING, Texas – The Irving Arts Center – an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution – celebrates Smithsonian Museum Day from 2-5 p.m. on Sept. 25 with a variety of free, family-friendly activities.

 

During Museum Day, visitors will preview Genghis Khan: The Exhibition – opening June 1, 2011 – create Mongolian-themed art projects, watch documentary screenings and play Khan Bingo. Tickets for Genghis Khan go on sale Oct. 1.

 

Documentary screenings start at 2:30 p.m. in Dupree Theater with The Story of the Weeping Camel and Searching for Khan’s Tomb. All other activities will take place in the Rehearsal Hall.

 

In addition, visitors will design wolf statues with local artist Tom Fields to celebrate Irving Public Library’s 2010 Big Read selection, Call of the Wild. The Big Read kicks off in October. For more information about the Big Read, visit www.IrvingLibrary.org

 

Smithsonian Museum Day is a national celebration for cultural institutions that are part of the affiliations program. The Irving Arts Center joined Smithsonian Affiliations in 2007 and has since brought multiple exhibitions and artifacts from the Institution’s collection to Irving.

 

BONUS! Visitors who are interested in volunteering for Genghis Khan: The Exhibition are invited to join the Arts Center from 1-2 p.m. on Sept. 25 for a volunteer information session.
