The Irving Arts Board awarded a $1,000 sponsorship to Cara Mía Theatre Company for four performances of Crystal City 1969 in December. The sponsorship was awarded as part of the Arts Board’s Community Activities Fund.
"We are thrilled by the support of the City of Irving and the Irving Arts Board,” said David Lozano, a member of Cara Mía’s Board of Directors. “Cara Mía has a very strong following in Dallas and we believe that our annual productions that focus on the Latino experience in the United States can be important cultural events for the Irving community. Our plays allow people from all cultural backgrounds to view the experience of Latinos through the incomparable medium of live theater. In this way, theater can be unifying."
Crystal City 1969 will be performed in the Irving Arts Center’s Dupree Theater at 8 p.m. on Dec. 8-11. The play commemorates the 41st anniversary of the historic student walkout in Crystal City, Texas. It tells the untold civil story of Mexican-American high school students who overcame discrimination in the south Texas town.
“We can see how these young people pursued the American dream and achieved extraordinary results by working through the democratic system,” said Lozano. “Crystal City 1969 is highly theatrical with elements of drama and comedy. Representing true historical events, this story is not viewed through rose-tinted glasses but represents our rich and complex American and Texas history. I think this story is so important because it allows us to reflect on how far we have come as a society and on how far we still have to go."
Tickets are $7-25 and can be purchased at www.IrvingArtsCenter.com or by calling (972) 252-2787. To learn more about Cara Mía Theatre Company, visit www.caramiatheatre.com.

In addition to Cara Mía, sponsorships have been awarded to the Annual DFW Dragon Boat Kite & Lantern Festival and the Irving Heritage Society.
