T.J. Lee Elementary School PTA wins Viewer’s Choice Award

T.J. Lee Elementary School PTA won the Viewer’s Choice Award as part of the Irving Arts Center’s 18th Annual Tree Decorating Competition. The PTA will receive a cash prize of $250.

The competition featured 22 trees decorated by Irving parent teacher groups. The theme for this year was a Story Book Christmas, and the trees were adorned with characters and symbols from beloved children’s holiday books. The trees are part of the Arts Center’s holiday exhibition and will be on display through Dec. 30. Gallery hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. The galleries will be closed Dec. 23-25.

The Viewer’s Choice Award was voted on by members of the community, and visitors had the opportunity to vote from Dec. 1-19. More than 300 visitors participated.

In addition, the Irving Arts Center invited Irving leaders to vote on the awards for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Best of Show. Twenty judges participated and scored the trees on overall attractiveness, how well the tree represented the organization, level of student participation and how the theme was used.

Representative Linda Harper-Brown, Irving Mayor Herbert Gears and Irving Arts Board Chair Jim Bullock presented the winners during a special ceremony on Dec. 3 at the Arts Center. The winners received a keepsake ornament and a cash prize. The winners include:

• Best of Show – $350: T.J. Lee Elementary PTA
• 1st Place – $250: Travis Middle School PTA
• 2nd Place – $200: Brandenburg Elementary PTA
• 3rd Place – $150: St. Luke Catholic School PTP
