Saturday School at Irving Arts Center

Classes meet Saturdays in the Irving Arts Center’s ART LAB, 2 -4 p.m. Unless otherwise specified, classes are for ages 6 – 10.  Students will dive into a variety of topics built on a theme like a cultural movement, rich period of history, or a particular medium or art-making technique. They create art and memories guided by our professional teaching artists.

Tuition is $75 per session. Art Connection members with a Smithsonian Affiliate/Family and above membership receive a 10% discount.

2017-2018 Saturday School Schedule:

Session One: Oct. 14 – Nov. 18, 2017.  Times: 2 – 4 pm

Creating a Graphic Novel: Storytelling with Pictures and Words
Instructor Dianne Tucker guides students in developing original stories using illustrations and limited text.  Sessions focus on storytelling fundamentals including plot, character, conflict and figurative language.  Students experiment with basic comic book formats and fantasy elements, using classic comics and graphic novels as examples to create their own works.

Instructor: Dianne Tucker (diannetucker) is a teacher, storyteller, playwright and producer who founded and co-managed Dallas Drama Company, a non-profit theatre company for more than a decade.

Session Two: Jan. 13 – Feb. 17, 2018. Times: 2 – 4 PM

Paint Like a (Pint-Sized) Pro
Learn a wide variety of techniques working in acrylic. Students will explore painting landscapes, still life, portraits and mixed media images. This class will provide ample individual attention, as well as group WEBSummer Camp 2 1 girl proudly displays artwork 008interaction, to help guide students in developing their own style of painting.

Instructor: VET, a recipient of a National Endowment of the Arts award, is a native Texas artist and arts educator who incorporates environmental recycling awareness through her artwork, commissions and various workshops.

Session Three: Feb 24 – March 31, 2018. Times: 2 – 4 PM

Fundamentals of Photography
Experiment and have fun learning the basics of photography and composition techniques with hands-on-activities to help you create great photographs. Equipment provided.

Instructor: Sheila Cunningham is a fine art photographer exploring the world through cell phone photography, digital collages, Polaroid transfers and artist books. Her artwork, project designs and articles have been widely published in books and national magazines. She teaches workshops at universities and fine art centers throughout the country and exhibits her work in one-person and national juried shows.

Session four: April 7 – May 12, 2018. Times: 2 – 4 PM

Sculpture: Explorations in the 3rd Dimension
Explore 3D design and the dynamic medium of sculpture while creating works of art with various materials such as clay, wire, paper and wood.

 Instructor: Sheila Cunningham teaches workshops at universities and fine art centers throughout the country and exhibits her work in one-person and national juried shows.
