Iona Batchelder Presented by Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra (The Music of Dance)

Experience an unforgettable evening of orchestral masterpieces with your LCSO that spans continents, cultures, and musical traditions. Aaron Copland’s vibrant El Salón México(1939) opens the program with infectious rhythms and colorful orchestration inspired by the spirit of Mexico. This piece was inspired by a trip to a dance hall while he was visiting Mexico and took years to complete upon multiple return visits and time in New York. Followed by Antonín Dvořák’s beloved Cello Concerto (1894), performed by soloist Iona Batchelder, which was written in New York while he was director of the National Conservatory of Music. The evening concludes with Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances (1940) which were written during a summer in New York. This piece was the last he wrote before his passing away in 1943. It is full of his longing for a Russia he knew was long gone, and what he felt was a culmination of all his knowledge as a composer. This program will leave music connoisseurs and new listeners deeply moved by the profound power of these three composers and their incredible works.
