Open Studio for Teens (Free)
Open Studio for Teens is a free artmaking program held on the second Sunday of each month. Together with artists and educators, teens can explore new materials and innovative techniques through hands-on projects that draw inspiration from themes and artists featured in the Arts Center’s collection and exhibitions.

The program is held in conjunction with the Second Sunday Funday art program.  From 1-4PM, all-ages are invited to create art, inspired by Irving Arts Center’s current exhibitions, seasons and holidays.

Sept. 13 – Mixed Media Mash Up!
Discover the creative possibilities of making mixed media artwork and collage with a variety of materials.

Oct. 11 – Pop Art Explorations
Our creative focus this month is Pop Art, an art movement that emerged in the 1950s and flourished in the 1960s, drawing inspiration from popular and commercial culture.

Nov. 8  – Art, Wonder & the Natural World
Explore the intersection of art, science and the natural world by making artwork depicting plants, animals and insects.

Dec. 13 – Mini-Masterpieces
Make a mini-masterpiece inspired by great works of art that can go on a tree, the shelf or your wall!

Create your own graphic novel or comic book.

Feb. 14  – Portraits/Patterns/Power
Inspired by the artists Kehinde Wiley, Amy Sherald and others, create a portrait with a vibrant patterned background.

March 14 – Tessellations & Geometric Art
What do the prints of world-famous graphic artist MC Escher and traditional quilts have in common? Geometric shapes, repeating patterns, mathematical principles and tremendous visual appeal. Learn how to create some mesmerizing designs & cool optical effects on paper.

April 11– Upcycled Art
Celebrate Earth Month by repurposing recyclable materials and other discarded items into unique works of art.

May 9- Flower Power
Make 2D and 3D creations inspired by flowers in famous works of art.

June 13 – Summer Camp Craft Classics
Crafty, cool classics like rock painting, friendship bracelets and god’s eye weavings are on the menu for old-school fun – or as a launchpad for a more creative take!

July 11 – Happy Birthday, Alexander Calder!
Alexander Calder (born July 22, 1898) was the inventor of the mobile, a form of kinetic sculpture. Create your own  sculpture that moves (or not!)  inspired by the work of this innovative and influential artist.

August 8 – Dogs in Art
Our four-legged friends are the inspiration for artmaking this month. Bring photos of your own fur-babies or refer to depictions of dogs in art throughout the ages as your inspiration.

Sept. 12 – Art Journaling
Art journaling is a great way to express yourself or simply experiment with materials. In this open studio session, make your own art journal by selecting an old book or a blank sketchbook, then combine writing, colors, images and mixed media to explore thoughts, feelings and creative ideas.
