Kids JumpstartJumpstART Stories & Art

Join us the first Thursday of each month, at 10 a.m. at the Irving Arts Center for stories and art!

Explore new stories and fun art projects during this creative story time that combines art and children’s literature. Create a take-home art project and then browse the galleries with your kids as part of this fun AND FREE morning activity.

Ages 2 and up. All supplies provided. Pre-registration is required for groups of 10 or more; please call the Box Office at 972.252.ARTS (2787).

October 5 —Wild, Wild West!
Saddle up for frontier folklore featuring pioneers, cowboys, cowgirls and American Indians.
*Inspiration: 2017 Irving Reads selected title: True Grit by Charles Portis

November 2 – Animal Tales!
Join us to read stories about some of our favorite critters.
*Inspiration: Irving Art Association Traveling Animal Art Exhibit at the Irving Arts Center

December 7 — Deck the Halls!
Tis the season to celebrate winter holidays!
*Inspiration: Dec. holidays (Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc.) and the annual Holiday Exhibition & Tree Decorating Competition

January 4, 2018 — Winnie the Pooh Day!
Let’ s read stories about the beloved bear from the Hundred Acre Wood and celebrate author A. A. Milne’s birthday!
*Inspiration: Celebration of Winnie the Pooh Day and anniversary of author Alan Alexander Milne’s birthday (January 18, 1882 –January 31, 1956). Milne is best known for his much loved books about the teddy bear Winnie-the-Pooh and for various poems.

February 1 — Winter Sports!
The 2018 Winter Olympic Games are our inspiration for this fun & frosty story time.
*Inspiration: the XXIII Olympic Winter Games in Pyongyang, South Korea, Feb. 9 – 25.

March 1 – Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
Green eggs and ham, anyone?, Join us to celebrate the legendary author and illustrator of such classics as Horton Hears a Who, Cat in the Hat , The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and The Lorax.
*Inspiration: The birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss) and celebrating Read Across America Day (March 2)

April 5 – Colors!
Let’s hop into spring and slide down a rainbow…. Colors and shapes are the theme for this month’s stories and art!
*Inspiration: Spring season and all current art exhibitions full of colors and shapes at Irving Arts Center — especially the annual Spring Show of Irving ISD Student Art!

May 3 – Moms Are Marvelous!
Mothers are the inspiration for this month’s stories and art.
*Inspiration: Celebrating mom! Mother’s Day is May 13.

 June 7– Camping!
Join us around the “campfire” for tales about adventure and fun – indoors and out!
*Inspiration: National Camping Month & “kick –off” for Irving Arts Center’s annual Summer Art Adventure Camp program

July 5 – On the Beach!
It’s summertime! Let’s dive into fun with stories and crafts inspired by the seashore.
*Inspiration: summer fun!  

August 2 – Dog Days of Summer!
We’ll beat the heat with stories about our cool canine friends!
*Inspiration: Man’s best friend, our canine companions!

September 6 – Jump into Fall!
Apples, pumpkins, falling leaves! What’s not to love about the season?
*Inspiration/Programmatic tie-in: Cooler temperatures!
