TGIF Comedy Nights Featuring Kristin Key

Irving Arts Center is pleased to introduce a new standup comedy series coming this summer: TGIF Comedy Nights.  Thank goodness it’s Friday. And thank goodness it’s funny! As the name implies, the shows will take place Friday evenings at 7:30PM (June 23, July 28 and September 22) and will be headlined by standup comedians Kristin Key, Arvin Mitchell and Eliot Chang.

KRISTIN KEY
Kristin Key grew up a minister’s daughter in a small town in West Texas. Much like Footloose, she was raised in a no-drinking, no-dancing, no instrumental music environment, so she immediately took up drinking, dancing and playing an instrument. Proving that the almighty has a strange sense of humor, Kristin came out of the closet at 15. Needless to say, it did not go well. So, Kristin decided to “take it back,” retreating back into the closet, trying a little harder to be straight.  

At 19, while in college to become a paramedic, Key signed up for an open mic at the local comedy club. As soon as she got onstage, she felt right at home with audiences eating up her original comedy songs and rapid-fire style of stand up. Soon she was doing small shows in the Texas panhandle and before long she was touring the country, eventually performing on NBC’s Las Comic Standing. There she performed to her biggest audience to date and earned her ticket to Hollywood amongst some of the best up and coming talent in the comedy world.

While participating in an anti-bullying fundraiser, Kristin, the preacher’s kid turned comedian, decided to share her hilarious story of coming out, taking it back, living in the closet, and meeting her wife. After 15 years in comedy, Kristin has found a way to perfectly blend together her thought-provoking, hilarious true stories and original songs with outrageous improv moments, ensuring that no two shows are the same.

In addition to her appearances on Last Comic Standing, she has performed on NBC’s Bring the Funny. She currently hosts the “Kristin Knows Blank” podcast and the weekly live show Keyed Up! with Kristin Key for the RushTix platform. Additional credits include: Comics Unleashed, VH-1’s 100 Greatest Series, The Bob and Tom show and Sirius and XM Satellite Radio. Key has recorded five full-length stand-up comedy albums and one studio music comedy album.

CJ STARR
CJ Starr was raised all over the Midwest, but his comedy was born in Texas. A mid-40s man, trying to win Stepdad of the Year, as he tries to figure out what he wants to do when he grows up; audiences of all kinds can relate and laugh along with him as he makes fun of his upbringing, marriage, family, kids, as well as stories of jail time, and the trials and tribulations of 10 years of Community College. He has worked as a writer for Apple TV and as an actor for the web series “Giggle-Lows.” He’s performed his standup on Fox Laughs multiple times. He can be seen on Hulu and heard on his Podcast, “Dad Bodies of Comedy.”
