Imaginal: Works by Brynn Higgins-Stirrup

Brynn Higgins-Stirrup, an Assistant Professor in Drawing at University of Texas at Dallas is drawn to the intersections between mapping, diagramming, biology, ecology, and botany—fields where empirical observation of the natural world edges towards the unknown and unknowable. Her methodology is rooted in sustained visual research and drawing as a process of discovery.

Her current work featured in this exhibition traces images that play between science and spirituality, examining work such as  Charles Darwin’s diagrams of heliotropism (plants following the sun) alongside contemporary scientific photographs of butterfly imaginal cells (cells that create enough biological dissonance within the caterpillar’s body to trigger its transformation into a butterfly).
